Asian and Pacific Islander Obesity Prevention Alliance (APIOPA)

APIOPA (formerly known as API Obesity Workgroup) is a collaborative of community-based organizations and government health agencies. Since 2005, our mission has been to empower the API community to improve their health by recognizing health disparities and to improve/address social, cultural, environmental, and political factors that contribute to the growing rates of obesity among API residents in LA County.

API obesity is not a myth.  In fact, Pacific Islanders have higher prevalence of obesity compared to all other ethnic groups and the percentage of overweight low-income API children in California is increasing faster than all other ethnic groups.  To learn more, visit us at www.apiopa.org.

Funded by The California Endowment and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, APIOPA is conducting a pilot program to reduce obesity though environmental change in the Japanese, Filipino and Pacific Islander communities of LA County. We provide dedicated community members with advocacy training and empower them to carry out long-lasting interventions that they feel will be most relevant to their communities. These CAG projects include changing orientation policies and a messaging campaign in Little Tokyo to increase access to physical activity, starting a food co-op model for Filipino churches, and creating safe parks in Pacific Islander neighborhoods.

For more information or to get involved, please email APIOPA@gmail.com or call Jessica at (213) 473-3022 or visit us online at www.apiopa.org.  Please ask about our listserv for regular emails with resources and meeting invitations, our Quarterly Bulletin for project updates, or the JA Healthy Living newsletter for tips specific to the Japanese American community.
