Know when to schedule your pap smear and how to prepare for your exam.
The pap smear can be done during a pelvic exam. The result will be more accurate if you plan your visit.
Do not schedule the exam when you are having your period. Make your appointment about 10-14 days after your menstrual period.
A better cell sample can be obtained if you do not douche or use vaginal medication for 48 hours before the test.
If you have an infection, it is important to have the clinician check it. This infection may need to be treated before your Pap smear can be performed. The infection may cover over any abnormal cells that are present.
If you would like to have a friend or family member come with you, choose a time when that person can take that time to visit the facility with you.
