How to read Chinese characters on the Web

If you do not have Chinese Windows, you must have Chinese supporting software, such as Richwin for Windows95, AsiaSurf for Windows 3.1, or MacViewHZ for Macintoshes, installed in your computer. You will have to use StuffIt to decompress MacViewHZ before you can install it.

Chinese langauge standards

Three types of standards (or codes) are commonly used on the net:

Big-5 -- 8 Bit. Originated in Taiwan. It is now mostly used in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

GB -- 8 Bit. Originated in Mainland China. When you decode a document with GB code, it is possible that the Chinese characters will be in simplified Chinese.

HZ -- 7 Bit. Modified GB code. It is sometimes used to transfer Chinese e-mail.

A simple example

You may have to change between these codes when you are viewing Chinese resources on the Web. Try this exercise.

Launch your Chinese supporting software and set it for Big-5 code

Read the two lines below

"»Áø¥÷£ø"

"¶p¶Û¨ð§§§Â°H"

Set you Chinese supporting software for GB code

Read the above two lines again

Now, you see the difference. To learn more, go to How to View Chinese in Net Applications.
